The Southern Bank Expands Team with Controller and Compliance Officer Hires


Spartanburg, S.C., October 24, 2022 – The Southern Bank announced today its newest hires, Lisa Burgess and Steven Bohner. Burgess has joined the team as the bank’s Controller, and Bohner has been hired as a Compliance Officer.

Burgess has 15 years in the financial institution industry. As a CPA she has worked at major accounting firms like Elliot Davis and KPMG, several community banks in South Carolina, and her own bookkeeping business. Her most recent position was as an Accounting Manager for The Furman Co., where she managed accounting for one S-corporation and three limited liability companies. Burgess will oversee the bank’s daily accounting operations, including the accounting, payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable departments.

Bohner has spent all of his 11 years of banking as a Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) for national banks. He most recently worked as an AML Compliance and Quality Assurance Analyst for U.S. Bank. Bohner’s roles were to analyze the adequacy of current controls designed to mitigate risks and comply with regulatory and policy requirements. At The Southern Bank, he will ensure compliance with relevant regulations, laws, and policies, including compliance with local, state, and federal financial laws.
